Siam Smiles – The Best Thai Food In Manchester, Where You’d Least Expect It

Siam Smiles Manchester

There are plenty of Thai restaurants in Manchester but until last year none that I really wanted to eat at. Most are either way too expensive or serving up average, westernised food. Or both. Then Siam Smiles came along. There was so much buzz about Siam right from the start, including a hugely positive review from Marina O’Loughlin in The Guardian. I’m ashamed …

MCR’s Secret Supper Club

A couple of weeks ago I was invited to a ‘secret supper club’ by Bonnie, owner of Yang Sing. I didn’t know at the time but later learned it was the first event organised by the ‘Manchester’s Finest’ website who worked with the China Town Association. Bonnie wasn’t joking when she called it a secret, I was only told: “Rendezvous …

I Am Pho, Chinatown, Manchester – A Healthy Start To 2014, Vietnamese Style

Apparently the average person in Britain puts on around 5lb over Christmas. I’d have been happy with that figure to be honest as unfortunately I exceeded it, quite significantly depending on the period of time we’re counting. Thanks to various events, Christmas menus, burgers etc.. I managed to put on over 7lb between Christmas Eve and New Years Day or …

Wong Wong Bakery, Chinatown, Manchester – So Good They Named It Twice

What do you do after a brilliant lunch at Japanese restaurant Yuzu when you crave sugar but they no longer serve dessert? Pop into the small Chinese bakery around the corner for lots of cake of course! I’d walked past Wong Wong Bakery on Princess Street in Chinatown many times since it opened in 2003 but had never made it inside before. That’s …

Back to Yuzu, Manchester For A Lesson In The Art Of Simplicity

Despite an issue with the service on my last visit (which was later resolved) I consider Yuzu one of my favourite restaurants in Manchester and recommend it to anybody who will listen. I’ve been meaning to return for ages and was shocked when I realised it had been over a year. During that time I’ve eaten in a lot of Japanese …

Ping Pong Cha @ Yang Sing, Manchester – Ping Pong + Beer + Dim Sum!

I receive quite a few invites from restaurants and PR companies these days so it takes something pretty interesting to attract my attention. That certainly came last week in the form of an invite to the launch party of ‘Ping Pong Cha’, Manchester’s first ping pong residency! It’s not every day you get invited to eat dim sum, drink beer …

Teppanyaki Manchester, Surely It Can’t Be As Bad As Sapporo?

After being so disappointed by Sapporo Teppanyaki last month I wasn’t sure what to expect from ‘Teppanyaki’ in Manchester. On the plus side it’s an independent restaurant run by a Japanese family, but then again so is Samsi and it doesn’t seem to have done much good there. It’s location on the edge of Manchester’s chinatown is another positive. As was arriving …

Yuzu, Chinatown, Manchester

I’ve never been hugely impressed with most of the Chinese restaurants in Manchester’s Chinatown but thankfully ‘Yuzu’, the solitary Japanese restaurant on offer is fantastic. It’s a tiny little place which completely adds to the charm, it feels really authentic with it’s Japanese artwork, various bottles and ornaments and wooden benches although i’ve yet to visit Japan so I can’t confirm that it is. …
